Sometimes I will begin these compositions with a design in mind, other times I'll just start laying out shapes and color. After interactively seeing how the shapes and colors correspond I'll have the sense of where the piece is going. In this case, with many rectangular shapes and straight edges, it was easy to see these as architectural pieces and the town square began to emerge. I often think of how the artists Kandinsky and Klee were able to evoke such strong moods in their work with similar concepts. Working in this way gives me the freedom to explore how the arrangement of colors in relation to each other and with the shapes in the composition can create a vibrant feeling of community – and I hope you find that in this work.
